PDLC stands for polymer dispersed liquid crystal. It is the switching layer in every switchable privacy film on the market, including the custom-fabricated film we specify from Ghost Glass™.

How the layer works

Liquid crystal droplets are dispersed through a polymer matrix and sandwiched between two conductive layers. Unpowered, the droplets sit at random angles and scatter transmitted light, producing the frosted white appearance. Energised, they align along the field and light passes through, so the film reads as clear.

Because the change is electrical rather than mechanical, switching is immediate and there is nothing to wear out mechanically — no motors, tracks, cords or slats.

What PDLC is not

PDLC is a privacy technology. In its frosted state it obscures detail and shape; it is not a blackout product and it does not darken a room the way a solar or blackout shade does. It is also not a security product, and we will not describe it as one.

Specifying it well means being precise about the goal: obscuring sightlines on demand, removing visual clutter from an architectural opening, and giving a room two modes instead of one.

How PDLC gets specified

  • Confirm glass dimensions and how many panels an opening needs
  • Decide the wire exit and edge detail on each panel
  • Locate the transformer and low-voltage run
  • Choose switch, remote or smart-system control
  • Confirm installation conditions and access
