Smart film installation, start to finish

Switchable film is an electrical installation as much as a glass installation. The projects that look effortless are the ones that were drawn properly first.

A smart film installation touches three trades: the film itself, the electrical supply behind it, and the finish carpentry or glazing detail that hides the wiring. Our job is to plan all three before a roll of film is cut, because PDLC is fabricated to size and cannot be trimmed to fix a measurement error on site.

Site survey and measurement

We measure every pane individually, including frame reveals and any silicone or gasket detail that affects the visible edge. On frameless glass we discuss where the busbar and lead wire will exit, because that decision determines what the finished panel looks like from inside the room.

At the same visit we identify a transformer location, a route for the low-voltage run, and whether the control will be a switch, a remote or an integration point in an existing smart system.

  • Pane-by-pane dimensions and panel layout
  • Wire exit point and edge-detail decision
  • Transformer / power supply location
  • Control method and switch position
  • Access, protection and scheduling constraints

Fabrication lead time

Film is custom fabricated to the measured dimensions. Ghost Glass™ publishes a normal product lead time of 12–20 working days depending on dimensions and quantity, so we schedule electrical rough-in and site preparation around that window rather than after it.

Installation day

The glass is cleaned to a level well beyond normal window cleaning — any particle trapped under the film is permanent. The film is dry-applied; it is not floated on water or slip solution the way conventional window tint is, which makes surface preparation and handling technique the entire job.

Edges are sealed and detailed, busbars are protected, and the panel is left undisturbed for the manufacturer's handling requirements before switching.

Electrical connection and commissioning

A licensed electrician makes the connections and terminates the low-voltage supply. This is a manufacturer requirement, not a preference, and it is also what protects the warranty position on the installed system.

Once energised, each panel is switched repeatedly, checked for uniform clearing, and handed over with control instructions and manufacturer documentation.
