Smart window film for South Florida interiors

A single pane of glass that is private when you want it and clear when you don't — without replacing the glass, and without a blind or shade anywhere in the room.

Smart window film — also called switchable privacy film or smart tint — is a laminate that changes state with electricity. With the power off, the film is frosted and the glass reads as a soft translucent panel. With the power on, the film clears and the view returns. The change is immediate and there are no moving parts.

The film is custom fabricated to your measured glass and applied directly to the pane you already own. That is the practical difference between smart film and factory-made smart glass: film is a retrofit, so an existing shower enclosure, office partition or entry sidelite can become privacy-on-demand glass without demolition or reglazing.

What smart window film actually does

PDLC — polymer dispersed liquid crystal — is the technology inside the film. Without voltage, the liquid crystal particles sit in random orientation and scatter light, which reads to the eye as frost. With low voltage applied, the particles align and the film becomes transparent. Ghost Glass™ lists the working voltage at 45–60 VAC and consumption at 0.5 watts per square foot.

In practical terms, that means a bathroom wall of glass can stay open to a garden all day and turn private in the second before someone steps into the shower. A glass-fronted office can be transparent for collaboration and opaque for a review meeting. The glass never changes; the state of the room does.

  • Power off = frosted privacy state
  • Power on = clear transparent state
  • Immediate switching, no mechanical parts
  • Applied to existing glass — no reglazing
  • Up to 99.99% UV protection per the manufacturer

Where it belongs in a South Florida home or building

Coastal architecture here is built around glass. Wide sliders, glass-walled bathrooms, waterfront living rooms and glass-front conference suites all share the same problem: the view is the reason the building exists, and privacy is the reason people cover it up. Smart film resolves that tension by making privacy a control decision rather than a permanent treatment.

Residentially, the film suits bathrooms, shower glass, entry doors and sidelites, kitchens, dining and living spaces, interior glass and home offices. Commercially, it is specified for conference rooms, executive offices, healthcare and dental treatment rooms, education spaces, hotels, restaurants, retail storefronts, showrooms and glass partitions.

How a project is planned

Every installation begins as a planning exercise, not a product order. We measure each pane, decide how many panels a wide opening needs — the manufacturer's maximum cut width is 5.9 feet, with unlimited length — then map the wiring path from each panel to a transformer location and confirm the control method.

Once the drawing is agreed, film is fabricated to your dimensions. Normal product lead time from Ghost Glass™ is 12–20 working days depending on size and quantity. Installation is dry-apply: no water, no slip solution, careful edge detailing and protected busbars. A licensed electrician performs the electrical connections, then every panel is switched and tested at handover.

Control options

Depending on the project, switching can be handled by a wall switch, a remote, or a compatible smart control system. The right choice is usually driven by who uses the room: a homeowner's ensuite is often a single elegant wall control, while a conference suite is more likely to be integrated with the building's control system so the room's state follows a scene or a schedule.
