Comparison
Smart film vs smart glass
Same behaviour, very different projects. The right choice usually depends on whether the glass already exists.
Interactive visualization — not a photograph of a completed installation.
Both products switch between frosted and clear with electricity. The difference is where the switchable layer lives: laminated inside a factory-made glass unit, or applied as film to a pane that is already in the opening.
Retrofit versus replacement
Smart glass is a glazing purchase. The unit is manufactured, delivered, glazed and wired, which means removing the existing glass — with all the access, hardware, sealing and finishing work that implies.
Smart film is a surface upgrade. Existing glass, frames and hardware stay exactly as they are. In an occupied home or a leased office, that difference is usually decisive.
Where each one wins
- New construction, glass not ordered
- Laminated smart glass is worth pricing
- Finished home or occupied suite
- Film retrofit
- Single bathroom or one partition
- Film retrofit
- Full-height exterior curtain wall
- Specialist glazing review first
- Phased rollout across floors
- Film retrofit
- Future flexibility to change
- Film retrofit — film can be replaced
Cost and timeline shape
Film pricing scales with panel count, wiring complexity and control method more than with raw square footage. Smart glass pricing carries the cost of the glazing unit itself plus installation of that unit, and typically a longer procurement path.
For film, Ghost Glass™ publishes a normal product lead time of 12–20 working days. Laminated switchable glass lead times are set by the glazing manufacturer and are generally longer.
What stays the same
Both need a licensed electrician for the connection, both need a transformer location, both need a control decision, and both benefit from being drawn before they are ordered.
